The first Thrive event brought our community together for one honest evening about what Buller could be. Here's what we've distilled from the night so far, what's next, and how to stay in the conversation.
Council, iwi, regional agencies, business and community leaders, all in one room for the first time in a long time. The mood was honest, not protective. People named the pressure — recent closures, job losses, reform fatigue, cost of energy, consenting drag — and got on with the harder question: what do we actually do about it.
The district has the assets. 84% DOC land, world-class trails, an aged-care expansion, a 10-year food strategy, mining and energy investment, an iwi partner ready to work with us. What it doesn't yet have is a shared story, a streamlined system, and a sustained revenue base that keeps the value here.
The full synthesis, including the presentations, table sessions and sticky-note material that fed into these themes, is being prepared and will live here soon.
Five minutes. Three short sections. You can skip any of them. If you'd rather stay anonymous, just leave the contact bit blank.
Short notes as things move. Bookmark this page or sign up below to get it by email.
The Thrive hub is up. Feedback form is open.
The room was full, the kōrero was honest, and eleven themes surfaced across the evening. Big thanks to everyone who turned up, contributed, and stayed for the long conversations after.
